RPG of the Year – 2011

I was hoping this year would be a little more eventful and tough to pick a top 5, but it really isn’t. Sure, the top 5 are EXCELLENT and there are a few good runner ups, but there are also a lot of terrible MMOs and poorly thought out mobile games. There are 81 games in total, but you probably already know what’s going on the top 5.

Why No RPG Is Impossible

Pretty much. Just accept it.

As I’ve said before, my first RPG was the original Final Fantasy and yes, on the original NES. I recently went back to play it and noticed a few things I didn’t quite remember. For starters, it wasn’t nearly as hard as I remember it, but that could be because I’ve been playing RPGs for a while now…or it could be that I know different party combinations that work well.

Dark Souls

General Overview

Touted as one of the toughest RPGs of all time, Dark Souls offers an engaging experience and a grand adventure…for all who dare to go through its endless amount of buttfuckery. La-Mulana

General Overview

Is it worth dying, dying, and dying again for a grand action/adventure of epic proportions? That’s what developer Nigoro set out to found out. A remake of the 2005 cult classic, La-Mulana is everything an oldschool action/adventure title should be down to its very core. It also helps that the music is pretty badass, too.

You Love It, I Hate It – Super Meat Boy

A lot of people often look back at older NES titles and try to say that Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts n Goblins were among the toughest of the tough. While they’re not wrong, I don’t feel that there’s any part of these games that I could deem as unfair or even frustrating. Tough, sure. Requiring lots of trial and error, maybe. But really, the toughest aspect of these games is having to sit down and do them in one go rather than having savepoints or a password system.

Etrian Odyssey

General Overview

Etrian Odyssey is a game neither for sissies or those expecting instant gratification. It’s “rape me in the ass” difficulty presents the player with ever-frustrating floors that increase seemingly exponentially in difficulty and prides itself on forcing you to grind as well as deal with constant trial and error. While it may not be for everybody, hardcore fans of this particular blend of dungeon crawler will not be able to put this title down.
