Why Games Like Xenogears Still Hold Up

This is sort of a review of xenogears, but from two angles: the me from right now and the me from 1998 (I was 16). Now, this might still be a little tricky, but effectively the reason for this article is for a lot of us we have this rose-colored glasses look of games from the yesteryear that we used to love, then when we go back to play it, we either make excuses for it or outright cannot enjoy it anymore.

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things – Episode 8

So this time around I figured I’d throw in some stuff that’s actually pretty clever. Most of the time games are fairly predictable, so when one can up and surprise me, it warrants attention. It should be noted that the examples I give will almost definitely include spoilers, so just a heads up. Confused? Intrigued? Indifferent? Then read on, my friend!

Backloggiversary! What The Hell Is That?

3 years ago today, I came upon a site called Backloggery. It’s a site where you can post games you’re playing, that you’ve beaten, that you own, and so on. It’s meant as a place to help motivate you into finishing everything you have as well as brag about your own personal accolades. You can even put in comments, ratings for games, make note your achievement points, and so on.

In celebration of this, I’m going to kind of pimp out what I’ve been playing in order of most frequently updated to least. And don’t forget, as I usually do, there are youtube links embedded in the pics. Enjoy!

RPG of the Year – 2003

This is a HUGE year. There are 45 games! This is also the first year we’re seeing a mobile game on the list. While you’d think this would make it hard for me to choose, just a simple glance at this list and I can already tell what’s what. Read on to find out!

Xenoblade Chronicles

General Overview

So the much hyped up and whined over RPG of all time finally breaks onto American shores, but was the wait worth it? Actually, yes. And no, I’m not just saying that because it’s a solid RPG for the Wii, I’m saying that because it’s actually a pretty damn good RPG with all kinds of fun concepts that are borrowed from many other great RPGs while still staying its own.

RPG of the Year – 1998

This was a HUGE year for RPGs, at least if you go off the numbers. There are 30 games! This was not an easy pick, so don’t think I just randomly selected these. I almost wish I’d done a top 10 list for this year because a lot of the RPGs are just plain incredible. Also, with apologies to Bruce here. This is the year of Baldur’s Gate, but you might not like what I have to say about it.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga – Endless Frontier

General Overview

What other game can you play as ridiculously big busted anime babes, Xenosaga’s KOS-MOS included, beating the hell out of robots with tons of over the top juggling combos and super combos with an emphasis on a hit multiplier and tag outs AND claim it’s an RPG? Seriously, if there’s an answer to that, I want to know. This game is addictive, fun, funny, and is a crossover that surprisingly works, even though the story is fairly unforgettable.
