Liberty or Death

General Overview

Once again establishing themselves as leaders in the sim/strategy genre (back at the time), Koei comes up with an amazing turn-based strategy/resource management game featuring major players and events of the American Revolutionary War.

The Simpsons Games

In 2007, the unthinkable happened: a genuinely GOOD Simpsons game was made. Yes, for a cartoon series that has been around for decades they sure did produce a lot of crappy games. And we’ll get to the good Simpsons game in a minute, but for right now, I wanted to highlight the cacophony crapshoot that was an endless series of failures in the Simpsons megaverse.

Sorcerer’s Kingdom

General Overview

An often overlooked title, Sorcerer’s Kingdom is effectively Shining Force, but with the ability to start and end combat anytime and anywhere. With the ability to micromanage your allies and a strong focus on singling out enemies, SK will provide a steady challenge to JRPG fanatics and has plenty to offer overall.

FPS of the Year 1994

This is a BIG year, but I think getting movies for all the games and briefly going over them, while it creates more work for me, is a better way of going about this. Sure, it means the article is HUGE, but unless I’m told it’s also BORING, I’m going to keep doing this so you can get a more accurate side by side comparison. That said, let’s hop into it!

FPS of the Year – Before All The Good Shit

This one’s going to be a little different and here’s why. So once again, I thought I would start in 1990. I mean, that seems to be a pretty good year to start with and it worked with everything else, so why not? I’LL TELL YOU WHY NOT. Wolfenstein 3D wasn’t even released until 1992. BUT that’s not to say there weren’t FPSs before then. So let’s briefly go over…those that came before.

RPG of the Year – 1995

This was another easy year. And yes, I’ll likely be annoying PC gamers, but before I do, consider this: all 5 of the titles selected were either PHENOMENAL or the best of their respective series. There is literally no reason they should be on the top 5 list and the only one I really feel bad about not including is Breath of Fire 2. There are 20 games in total, so let’s get started!

RPG of the Year – 1994

This is another year where I’m sure PC gamers are going to be pissed with me. To be honest, I was about ready to call it when I saw the list, but there were certain PC titles I wasn’t sure about. This was a good year for console RPGs and it really shows. There were 19 games in total and keep in mind that perhaps I can’t see some of these titles’ charm because I didn’t have a PC that could play them and I did have various consoles that could.

RPG of the Year – 1991

This was actually a tough year for me to choose through games. There were a lot of PC RPGs, naturally, but the problem is a lot of them, yet again, are not very easy to simply pick up and play. Most of them require thorough understanding of the manual or perhaps prior knowledge of the series in general to truly appreciate the experience.

It occurred to me while writing my article way way back about how I’ll remember Final Fantasy that it probably wasn’t fair to leave out so many great RPGs. Then I realized, if I did that, goddamn that would have been a ridiculously long article. Then again, it was already pretty long, so why not figure out which were the BEST. Yes, I realize this would be in my opinion, but at the very least I can highlight them, give a top 5 for the year, and the runner ups.
